Weak prices over the year ahead – Shane Oliver

Head of investment strategy and chief economist at AMP Capital Investors, Shane Oliver, gives his macro views on the short term future for Australian property in this opinion article

He sees that we have entered an "extended period of constrained range bound house prices as average income levels catch up" and says the key things to watch for in terms of further downside risk to property values are:

  • a surge in supply,
  • much higher levels of interest rates and
  • anything that sharply pushes up unemployment
